Diepkloof, Soweto — A Complete Guide
History, amenities, culture, business, and travel information for one of Soweto’s oldest and largest suburbs.
📜 History of Diepkloof
Diepkloof was established in 1959 by the apartheid government to accommodate thousands of Black South Africans who were forcibly removed from freehold areas like Alexandra. Initially, much of the landscape was dominated by single-sex hostels built for male mine workers, alongside rows of standard four-roomed public houses colloquially nicknamed “matchbox houses”.
Over the decades, Diepkloof resisted its forced structural design as a dormant township.During the early 1980s, the community expanded dynamically, giving rise to Diepkloof Extension (often called “Diepkloof Ext”). This section transformed into one of the earliest and most famous affluent Black middle-class suburbs in South Africa, featuring custom-designed architectural homes. Today, Diepkloof stands as a vibrant, highly sought-after urban node blending deep political heritage with massive commercial modernization.
