DOBSONVILLE

1. History of Dobsonville

Dobsonville was established in 1957 primarily as a resettlement township under the Roodepoort Municipality before later merging with Soweto. Its historical roots stem directly from the “Old Location” in Roodepoort West. Between 1955 and 1967, the apartheid government forcefully removed Black residents from the Old Location, destroying their homes and relocating them to Dobsonville.

The Old Location was famous for its deeply rooted community networks and strong church presence, cultural links that relocated residents brought with them to Dobsonville. In 1975, the community gained its definitive landmark with the construction of the Dobsonville Stadium. In 1994, Dobsonville officially opened the very first formal shopping mall in Soweto’s history, symbolising a shift from a restricted residential zone to a modern commercial and political hub.
