Klipspruit, Kliptown & Pimville

Welcome to Pimville, Soweto — a historic and welcoming township area with strong community connections, local enterprise and cultural character.

Kliptown and Pimville are two of the most historically significant and deeply connected townships in South Africa.Kliptown, established in 1903, holds the title of the oldest residential district in Greater Soweto. It achieved global immortality on 25–26 June 1955 when over 3,000 delegates gathered at Walter Sisulu Square to adopt the Freedom Charter, laying the moral blueprint for South Africa’s democratic constitution. Directly adjacent lies Pimville, which originated in 1904 as a municipal emergency camp for residents displaced by an inner-city bubonic plague outbreak. Renamed in 1934 in honour of humanitarian Howard Pim, Pimville has transitioned from an informal settlement into an upmarket, highly sought-after suburb boasting top-tier sporting facilities, shopping centres, and academic institutions.
