1. History of Jabulani & Moletsane Townships
Jabulani and Moletsane were formally established in 1956 during the acceleration of state-enforced segregation under the apartheid regime. To fragment unity among Black residents, the state designated new zones along strict ethnic lines. Moletsane was explicitly reserved for Sotho and Tswana-speakers, whereas Jabulani was initially demarcated for Zulu and Xhosa populations.
Historically, Jabulani became the administrative civic engine of Soweto, hosting the municipal council chambers, a high-density worker hostel, and severe security outposts. Conversely, Moletsane evolved as a resilient, close-knit residential enclave that actively mobilized during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Both townships have collectively broken free from their restrictive spatial pasts. Today, the Jabulani Civic Precinct stands as an ultra-modern urban center driving multi-million rand retail, state-of-the-art theatre arts, and standard-setting district healthcare.
