Zola & Zondi

Welcome to Zola, Soweto. This guide will highlight local businesses, community information, entertainment, leisure, shopping, and education in the area.

Zola and Zondi are two of the most historically rich, culturally vibrant, and deeply resilient sister neighborhoods located in the western region of Soweto, Johannesburg. Known locally for anchoring the soul of the township’s creative, political, and daily life, they represent the authentic modern township experience. [1]

1. The History of Zola & Zondi to Date

  • Establishment & Relocation (1950s): Both Zola and Zondi were established in 1954 under the apartheid regime’s Group Areas Act. They were deliberately laid out alongside neighboring areas like Tladi and Dhlamini using a £3 million/R6-million housing loan facilitated by mining magnate Sir Ernest Oppenheimer to build rapid municipal housing.
  • Ethnic Separation: Under apartheid’s spatial engineering, specific blocks in Soweto were ethnically segregated. Zola and Zondi were specifically designated to house Zulu and Xhosa families who were forcibly evicted from inner-city “black spots” like Sophiatown, Brickfields, and the Eastern Native Township.
  • Political Resistance & The Gangster Era: Through the 1960s to the 1980s, Zola developed a notorious reputation across South Africa for fierce underground gangster syndicates. Infamous street crews like the 11 Boys (1960s), the Maumaus (1970s), and the Chivas or Big18s (1980s) dominated the turf. Simultaneously, the youth of Zola and Zondi were deeply embedded in active liberation politics, fighting municipal authorities during the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
  • The Birthplace of Kwaito Culture: In the late 1990s and 2000s, Zola shed its notorious criminal shadow to become the spiritual capital of South African Kwaito music and youth pop culture. It birthed and nurtured legendary musical and television icons—most notably Mandoza (Mduduzi Tshabalala) and Zola 7 (Bonginkosi Dlamini)—while hosting legendary figures like pop star Brenda Fassie during her early career years.
